Champissage - History

The techniques that structure Indian Champissage have been practiced for over a thousand years by people in India. Originally, women practiced the techniques with oil because they thought that it would keep their hair strong and healthy. Of course, they were right since massaging the scalp increases blood circulation and the oils contain nutrients, which flow to the hair follicle.

The early Ayurvedic texts (4000 years ago) indicate that massage plays an important role in Indian life; it not only stimulates the skin but encourages the body's natural healing abilities. Massage continues to be an important part of family life in India and it occurs across generations. Indian Champissage was originated by women who incorporated it into their grooming practices. Then, barbers used the techniques as a way of finishing a haircut and it eventually became a custom. Everyone got a massage from their barber! The techniques were passed on to subsequent generations and now, it's widespread in India (as well as in other parts of the world).

Narendra Mehta (a blind man from India) has had over 25 years experience in body work. He traveled through India in 1978 and put together various Champissage techniques, which also included an Ayurvedic element of chakra balancing. In 1981, he started practicing and teaching this new methodology. His is the technique I use.
